Pierre Lachenay (Jean Desailly), a Paris publisher and lecturer with a wife and a young daughter, wants more than his orderly life gives him. On a flight to Lisbon he meets the air hostess Nicole (Françoise Dorléac), and he cannot stop going back to her. Truffaut follows Pierre as he lies to Franca (Nelly Benedetti) and arranges his days around hotel rooms and airports, a man who has plenty to lose and keeps reaching anyway.
