The Sorcerer's Apprentice
A one-eyed sorcerer lures a beggar boy named Krabat to his mill to work as an apprentice, and the boy learns black magic alongside the other lads. Karel Zeman builds the film from cutout animation, with the sorcerer's world crowded and ornate and shadowed. Each Christmas one of the apprentices must face the master in a duel, and Krabat has to decide what he is willing to learn to survive among them.
