The Sound Barrier

John Ridgefield (Ralph Richardson) is an aircraft magnate who has staked his fortune, and his family, on building a plane that can fly faster than sound. His daughter Susan (Ann Todd) marries Philip Peel (John Justin), a young RAF pilot who ends up testing the prototype. David Lean fills the film with aircraft and open sky, but it is Ridgefield's will that drives it, and the people around him pay the price.
