The Southerner

(1945)Directed by Jean Renoir92 minDrama
“The picture that never lets go of your heart!”

Why does a cotton picker walk away from steady wages to farm a patch of ground that isn't his own? Sam Tucker (Zachary Scott) wants a better future for his family, so he moves them onto a plot in Texas, with Nona (Betty Field) and Granny (Beulah Bondi) beside him. Jean Renoir shoots the work in a plain, documentary manner, letting the dirt and the weather carry the story.
