Will (Gary Grimes), Les (Ron Howard) and Tod (Charles Martin Smith) are three farm boys who want out of the dirt and into a life like the one the outlaw Harry Spikes (Lee Marvin) talks about. They find him wounded after a gun battle, and his tales of the old days send them off to rob a bank of their own, which goes badly. Richard Fleischer keeps Spikes in the frame, a gruff man with a bandit's stories, three boys listening close.
