Charles "Slim" Lindbergh (James Stewart) wants to be the first man to fly alone from New York to Paris, and in 1927 he has no plane and no money to build one. Billy Wilder follows him through the hunt for backers and the design of a single-engine aircraft stripped down to carry fuel, with Bud Gurney (Murray Hamilton) and the engineers at Ryan Airlines beside him. If the plane fails or the fuel runs short, the ocean offers no second chance.
