Roy Glennister (John Wayne), an honest ship captain, loses his mine claim to a swindle and goes looking for help against Alexander McNamara (Randolph Scott), the man who runs the town. His only ally is Cherry Malotte (Marlene Dietrich), a saloon singer with her own history in the place. Ray Enright sets it all in the saloon, where Dietrich stands at the front of the room singing.
