The Spousals of God

João de Deus (João César Monteiro) is visited by a messenger of God, and soon after he wins his friend's girlfriend, Joana, on a roll of the dice. Monteiro, who also directs and plays the lead, shows his hero in the same deadpan manner whether he is receiving heavenly instructions or collecting a prize at a gaming table. He stages everything flatly and without hurry, as though a miracle and a bet were equally ordinary business.
