In 1917, a German submarine slips toward the Orkney Isles with orders to sink the British fleet. Captain Ernst Hardt (Conrad Veidt) goes ashore to meet his contact, and the woman waiting for him is a schoolmistress (Valerie Hobson). It was the first film Michael Powell made with Emeric Pressburger, and he handles the story as a plain, closed-in thriller.
