Brooklyn, 1986. Bernard (Jeff Daniels) and Joan Berkman (Laura Linney), both writers, tell their two sons they are separating, and Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) and Frank (Owen Kline) are split between two households. Noah Baumbach draws on his own childhood, shooting handheld on Super 16 so the camera stays close to the boys. Walt sides hard with his father and Frank with his mother, and the family has to find some way to stay a family.
