In 1950s Sicily, Joe Morelli (Sergio Castellitto) drives from village to village posing as a talent scout for the big film studios. He sets up a camera, tests the locals, and takes money or favours from anyone who hopes to be seen. Giuseppe Tornatore follows him to Beata (Tiziana Lodato), a young illiterate novitiate desperate to change her life, and Joe is caught between the lie he sells and the arrest that hangs over him.
