Jem Starling (Eliza Scanlen) cannot settle into the life her Kentucky fundamentalist church has laid out for her. At seventeen she dances with the girls' group and watches the rules close in, until the youth pastor Owen Taylor (Lewis Pullman) comes back to the congregation. Laurel Parmet's debut sets a girl's first love against a community that already has an answer for what she is allowed to want.
