Nobody can say why Pookie Adams (Liza Minnelli) latches onto the shy, buttoned-up freshman she meets on a bus. By the time she turns up unannounced at his campus, Jerry Payne (Wendell Burton) has stopped being annoyed, and what starts as friendship begins to look like romance. Alan J. Pakula, in his first film as director, keeps the camera close on the two of them as her restless behavior starts to show.
