“...all it takes is a little confidence.”

Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) is a young grifter in 1936 who wants one thing: to pay back the mobster who had his friend murdered. He goes looking for Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman), an older con man known for the big games, and together they set out to take a fortune from Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). George Roy Hill puts the two men back together after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Lonnegan is a man who kills the people who cross him.
