The Story of a Cheat

A boy sent to bed without supper for stealing learns the wrong lesson from it: his whole family eats the poisonous mushrooms and dies, and he alone is spared, so he decides dishonesty pays. Sacha Guitry plays the grown cheat (le tricheur) and narrates his own life over almost no dialogue, with a blonde jewel thief and a brunette gambler turning up again and again. Guitry wrote the novel and directed the film, and he lets his own dry voice carry the story.
