“The book that was talked of in a Whisper!”

Jenny Hager (Hedy Lamarr) grows up poor in early 19th century New England and learns young that her beauty can get her what nothing else will. As a grown woman she sets about seducing and deceiving the men around her, among them the timber merchant Isaiah Poster (Gene Lockhart) and his son Ephraim (Louis Hayward). Edgar G. Ulmer, working from Ben Ames Williams's novel, lets her ambition play out in a historical melodrama made on a modest budget.
