The Stranger

A letter arrives at a well-off Calcutta household from Manomohan Mitra (Utpal Dutt), who says he is Anila's uncle, gone for decades, and soon he is at the door asking to stay. Anila (Mamata Shankar) and her husband Sudhindra (Dipankar Dey) take him in, wary, while the stories of his travels start to run against everything their ordinary comfort assumes. Satyajit Ray, in his last film, keeps to the dinner table and the sitting room, and lets the talk do the work.
