“Lock the door. Pretend you're safe.”

A knock comes at 4 a.m. at the remote vacation home of Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) and James Hoyt (Scott Speedman), and the voice behind the door asks for someone who doesn't live there. Bryan Bertino built the film from a real string of break-ins in his childhood neighborhood and from the Tate murders. The fear it deals in is plain: strangers with no reason, who pick a house and a night, and nothing the couple did to earn it.
