Monty Stratton (James Stewart), a star pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, loses a leg in a hunting accident and has to decide what he does with the rest of his life. Sam Wood follows the true story from the ballpark to the recovery room, with Barney Wile (Frank Morgan) and Ma Stratton (Agnes Moorehead) close by. Through all of it, his wife Ethel (June Allyson) stays at his side, and the marriage is what he leans on hardest.
