One question hangs over a Southern town at the turn of the century: who is the young woman living quietly among them, and why does her real identity matter so much? Judge William Pittman Priest (Charles Winninger) is up for election, and he spends the weeks before the vote on that secret, on his Civil War memories, and on keeping a mob from a young Black man.
