Paddy Carmody (Robert Mitchum) is a sheep drover in the Australian Outback of the 1920s, happiest when the wagon is rolling and no fence is in sight. His wife Ida (Deborah Kerr) and teenage son Sean want a farm of their own, and Fred Zinnemann follows the family from one job to the next, through shearing sheds, drinking and gambling. Each stretch of road leaves Ida a little closer to the end of her patience.
