“His Was a Strange Secret, Hers Was a Strange Love”

London in 1902, and Philip Marshall (Charles Laughton) runs a tobacconist's shop and goes home each night to a wife who never stops nagging him. He finds some relief in the company of Mary Gray (Ella Raines), a young stenographer. Robert Siodmak follows Philip once a blackmailer and a quiet police inspector both learn his secret, and either one could cost him his home, his freedom and his life.
