The Swimmer

“When you talk about "The Swimmer" will you talk about yourself?”

On a summer afternoon in Connecticut, Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) turns up at a friend's backyard pool in nothing but swim trunks. He decides to go home by water, swimming across the neighborhood one pool at a time. Frank Perry, adapting John Cheever's story, has him greeted at each stop by a neighbor, among them Julie Ann Hooper (Janet Landgard) and Shirley Abbott (Janice Rule), and every hello carries a little more history between them than Ned lets on.
