A villa near St. Tropez, a long summer, and a couple with nothing to do but each other. Jean-Paul (Alain Delon) and Marianne (Romy Schneider) are happy until she invites her former lover Harry (Maurice Ronet) to stay, and he arrives with his teenage daughter Penelope (Jane Birkin). Jacques Deray fills the house with four people who say little, and the film is about how easily desire and old jealousy turn a holiday into a contest.
