A hijacker named Ryder (John Travolta) seizes a subway car full of passengers and demands a ransom within the hour. Walter Garber (Denzel Washington), a train dispatcher, becomes the only voice on the line between Ryder and chaos, talking him down while police scramble below the streets. Tony Scott cuts between the tunnels and the control room with the tempo of a countdown, the fluorescent glow of the station flickering as the deadline shrinks.
