France, 1661. Cardinal Mazarin (Silvagni) has died, and the young Louis XIV (Jean-Marie Patte) tells the court he means to govern as well as reign. Roberto Rossellini follows him through palace rooms thick with silk and candlelight, where Jean Baptiste Colbert (Raymond Jourdan), Mazarin's fiscal advisor, becomes the one man the king can trust with the treasury.
