Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) is a con man sent to Italy to retrieve Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), a wealthy playboy absorbed in sun and money and beautiful people. Ripley insinuates himself into Dickie's world, learning his tastes and rhythms. But proximity to that life makes Ripley want it so badly that he begins to disappear into someone else, and the cost of that performance is everything he touches.
