In Texas, just after the Civil War, brothers Ben (Clark Gable) and Clint Allison (Cameron Mitchell) leave the Confederate Army and sign on with the businessman Nathan Stark (Robert Ryan) to drive a herd north to Montana. Raoul Walsh sends them across more than a thousand miles of rough country, where Jayhawkers, Sioux and bad weather all lie in wait. The herd, the money and the brothers' lives are on the trail together.
