John Kennedy (Dick Powell) is a New York police sergeant who hears of a plot to kill President-elect Abraham Lincoln and boards the night train to Washington in 1861 to stop it. Anthony Mann keeps nearly everything inside the cars, where passengers like Ginny Beaufort (Paula Raymond) and Caleb Jeffers (Adolphe Menjou) sit close and say little. Kennedy walks the swaying corridors, searching every face for the one who means it.
