The Tempest

(1979)Directed by Derek Jarman95 minDrama, Fantasy
““We are such stuff as dreams are made on and our little life is rounded with a sleep.””

A storm hits a ship full of Italian nobles, and the one who raised it is Prospero (Heathcote Williams), a banished duke living on a desolate island with his daughter Miranda (Toyah Willcox). Ariel (Karl Johnson), the spirit he commands, carries out his plan while Caliban (Jack Birkett) schemes against him. Derek Jarman stages Shakespeare's play as theatre, with the spells, the wonder and the odd characters kept in plain view.
