The Ten Commandments

(1923)Directed by Cecil B. DeMille136 minDrama, History

Moses (Theodore Roberts) leads the Israelites out of Egypt, with Rameses (Charles De Rochefort) ruling behind them, and carries the stone tablets down to a people already worshipping a golden calf. Then the film jumps to modern San Francisco, where two brothers, John and Dan, compete for the same woman and quarrel over the shoddy materials in a cathedral. Cecil B. DeMille builds the Egyptian half on enormous sets, lining the frame with columns and crowds.
