The Tenant

“Apartment for rent: Quiet building. Furnished. 2 rooms. Previous tenant committed suicide.”

The apartment in Paris is available because its last tenant, a young woman, is in the hospital, and Trelkovsky (Roman Polanski), a quiet, inconspicuous man, takes the room without fuss. Monsieur Zy (Melvyn Douglas) and the other residents begin to watch him, and the little rules of the building press closer. He meets Stella (Isabelle Adjani), a friend of the woman who lived there before, and the neighbors' noise and glances start to get under his skin.
