It's Christmastime in New York in the early 1930s, and retired detective Nick Charles (William Powell) would rather be at a party with a cocktail in his hand than on a case. Dorothy Wynant (Maureen O'Sullivan) asks him to find her missing father, an eccentric inventor, and Nick's wife Nora (Myrna Loy) wants in on it. W.S. Van Dyke leaves the couple at the end of a long night, the glasses on the table and the two of them still trading remarks.
