The Thin Red Line

“Every man fights his own war.”

The Americans land on Guadalcanal expecting a fight and get none, and that quiet is where C Company's story starts. Terrence Malick follows the men of Charlie Company, among them Private Witt (Jim Caviezel) and Sergeant Welsh (Sean Penn), from that unopposed beach into the long, bloody push up Mount Austen. Witt keeps asking what he is doing there, and the war keeps giving him reasons to ask.
