In 19th-century rural northern Vietnam, Mây (Nguyen Phuong Tra My) is married at fourteen to a wealthy landowner as his third wife. Her new home looks gentle enough, her husband favors her, and she soon becomes pregnant with the son everyone hopes for. Ash Mayfair, making her feature debut, films the household slowly, with a patience that lets Mây watch everything around her.
