In 19th-century New York, the inventor Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce) builds a time machine to change the events of his past. Instead it throws him 800,000 years ahead, to a world where humanity has split into two warring races, among them Mara (Samantha Mumba) and the Über-Morlock (Jeremy Irons). Simon Wells, great-grandson of H. G. Wells, sends Alexander through the centuries, a man who set out to undo one loss and now has no way home.
