In 1948, Fuad (Saleh Bakri) is a young man in Nazareth when the new state of Israel is declared around him and his family. Elia Suleiman builds the film in four chapters from his own family's memories, following them as Palestinians labelled "Israeli-Arabs" who stay on in their homeland. Fuad and his wife are staking everything on remaining there, and the film keeps asking what a minority risks by staying in the only place it has ever lived.
