The Tin Drum

(1979)Directed by Volker Schlöndorff162 min · RDrama, History, War
“A savage, sweeping epic of society in chaos.”

Oskar Matzerath (David Bennent) is born in the Free City of Danzig in 1924, and at age three he falls down a flight of stairs and stops growing. He keeps a tin drum strapped to his chest, and his mother Agnes (Angela Winkler) and her husband Alfred (Mario Adorf) raise him in a household that has no say in what comes next. Volker Schlöndorff follows the family into 1939, when war breaks out and the child's refusal to grow up begins to cost everyone around him.
