The Touch

Karin Vergerus (Bibi Andersson) is a Swedish housewife whose quiet marriage to a doctor, Andreas (Max von Sydow), is interrupted by David Kovac (Elliott Gould), an American archaeologist with a past she cannot read. She begins an affair with him, unaware of the scars he carries as a Holocaust survivor. Ingmar Bergman keeps the camera close on Andersson and Gould, so that every glance between them feels like an argument neither will say aloud.
