The Toy
“When Jackie Gleason told his son he could have any present he wanted, he picked the most outrageous gift of all...Richard Pryor.”
In 1982, the department store belongs to U.S. Bates (Jackie Gleason), a plutocrat who runs it the way he runs everything else. On his son Eric's yearly visit, he tells the boy he can have anything in the toy department, and Eric points at Jack Brown (Richard Pryor), the janitor who made him laugh. Richard Donner follows the week that results, and a man treated as a purchase has to teach a lonely boy what a friend is.
