“Nothing stands still.”

A middle-aged Jack (Sean Penn) wanders through a modern city, haunted by a childhood he cannot stop going back to. Terrence Malick takes him to 1950s Texas, where young Jack (Hunter McCracken) grows up between a stern father, Mr. O'Brien (Brad Pitt), and a gentle mother, Mrs. O'Brien (Jessica Chastain), with images of the universe's beginnings cutting in. What the film wants to know is where a single life comes from and whether faith can answer for it.
