The Trench

(1999)Directed by William Boyd98 minWar, History

No one in the trench knows exactly when the order will come, only that it will, and that the Somme is somewhere beyond the parapet. Sgt. Telford Winter (Daniel Craig) keeps a squad of young soldiers, among them Billy Macfarlane (Paul Nicholls), busy through the last forty-eight hours of June 1916 with boredom, fear and restless talk. William Boyd, making his debut as a director, keeps the camera inside the trench and never lets it climb out.
