Mary Clancy (Hayley Mills) and her friend Rachel Devery (June Harding) arrive at St. Francis Academy as new boarders with one aim, which is to keep from being bored. Mother Superior (Rosalind Russell) runs the school with an iron fist, and Ida Lupino sets the two girls' pranks against her rules. As the years pass, the girls start to see the nuns they tormented as people with lives of their own.
