“Life is how you live it... not how you spend it.”

Jason Stevens (Drew Fuller) sits down for the reading of his billionaire grandfather's will, sure that a large inheritance is coming his way. What he gets instead is a list of tasks set by Howard "Red" Stevens (James Garner), each one to be finished before any money changes hands. Michael O. Sajbel follows Jason through the tests, with Emily Rose (Abigail Breslin), a young girl he meets along the way, standing beside him in the lawyer's office.
