Geneviève Emery (Catherine Deneuve) is seventeen, working the counter of her widowed mother's umbrella shop in Cherbourg in 1957, and she wants nothing except Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), the young auto mechanic she loves. Then Guy is called up for two years of fighting in Algeria. Jacques Demy has every line of dialogue sung, even the small talk, and Geneviève is left to decide what she can bear to wait for.
