Colonel John Henry Thomas (John Wayne), a Union officer, wants to sell a herd of horses to the Mexican government at $35 a head and get paid. Rock Hudson plays Colonel James Langdon, a Confederate who has lost his land to carpetbaggers and is leading displaced Southerners into Mexico to start over. Andrew V. McLaglen sets both groups on the same road, with bandits and revolutionaries in the way and no safe ground for either.
