Mike Reese (Dan Duryea), a reporter fired from a big city daily, takes his shady methods to a small-town newspaper owned by E.J. Stanton (Herbert Marshall). Cy Endfield sets him among Gale Storm's Catherine Harris, the loud-mouthed gangster Carl Durham (Howard Da Silva) and a town where everyone knows everyone. Reese has burned every bridge he had, and he walks into this one still working an angle.
