Joe Valachi (Charles Bronson) sits in a federal prison with a price on his head, put there by Don Vito Genovese (Lino Ventura), the boss he once served. When another inmate tries to slit his throat, Valachi decides to break the code of silence. Terence Young films his testimony in grainy, close rooms, and Valachi talks as a man who knows that talking means he can never go back.
