In 1870s Pittsburgh, Mary Rafferty (Greer Garson) comes from a family of steel mill workers who object when she takes a job as a maid in the house of the Scotts, who own the mill. Tay Garnett sets her days among the polished rooms upstairs against the mill hands' strike below. Mary draws the eye of Paul Scott (Gregory Peck), the family's son, though he is already engaged, and the two keep finding reasons to be in the same room.
