Superintendent George Edward Grodman (Sydney Greenstreet) is a Scotland Yard veteran whose last case ended with an innocent man hanged. Now Grodman is forced to investigate a fresh murder, that of the key witness in that same case. Don Siegel, in his first full-length feature, leaves Grodman alone with Victor Emmric (Peter Lorre) and the matter between them.
